The most recent attack on Clean Air and Clean Water was introduced by the Republicans in the House of Representatives earlier this week. We call it the TRAIN WRECK act. They call it the Transparency in Regulatory Analysis of Impacts on the Nation (TRAIN) act (H.R. 2401).
Over 500,000 Americans asked the EPA to implement mercury safeguards for our waterways and, consequently, the fish we consume. Mercury is a known neurotoxin- and coal plants are the biggest source. Mercury has contaminated lakes and rivers across the continent, resulting in fish consumption warnings due to its tendency to bioaccumulate.
So why are some members of Congress supporting H.R. 2401, The Transparency in Regulatory Analysis of Impacts on the Nation (TRAIN) Act? The TRAIN Act would delay implementation of the Utility mercury rule and other clean air and water protections.
The answer is simple: While stopping mercury pollution is good for both our health and our economy, it's not good for Big Coal's profits.
