In July, the Humboldt Bay Harbor District unveiled visual simulations of the proposed heavy lift terminal in Samoa, where offshore wind turbines would be built and stored temporaily before being installed 20-30 miles offshore. Drone image by Oren Nardi. Although the size of these turbines has yet to be determined, they are likely to be around 900 feet tall - three times taller than the former pulp mill smokestack in Samoa. The proposed site for building the turbines, known as Redwood Marine Terminal 1, is just south of the Samoa Bridge and 0.4 mi from the west side of Tuluwat Island, the center of the universe for Wiyot people. The City of Eureka returned the sacred site to the Wiyot Tribe in 2019. It is also home to hundreds of nesting egrets and herons. Many of you have asked about the visual impacts of the project - this is an opportunity to get an idea of what it would look like from various vantage points around Humboldt Bay, including the Eureka Waterfront. Opportunities to comment on other impacts of the project are pending, and we'll keep you informed as those arise. For more info about the proposed project, visit the Harbor District's webpage. For more info about the proposed offshore wind energy projects off the coast of Humboldt Bay, visit North Coast Offshore Wind FAQs.
