Do you know why the eelgrass beds of Humboldt Bay are so important to the Pacific Coast? Thanks in part to the William Adrian and Lillian Robinson Memorial Fund, you can find out while enjoying a free guided tour onboard a 25-foot Boston Whaler.
Launching most weekends through the summer and fall, trained Humboldt Baykeeper volunteers share the maritime history and ecological information about Humboldt Bay with neighbors, students and friends. This was just one of many programs funded throughout the region with a “Field of Interest” grant.
Humboldt Area Foundation’s “Field of Interest” grant program provides grants through a collection of funds that center on either specific populations, geographical areas or causes.
It’s an example of neighbors helping neighbors to collectively improve their community through six categories: Arts and Culture, Education, Companion Animals, Natural Environment, Senior Opportunities and Southern Humboldt. This year, more than $100,000 is offered through this grant program.
Applications are now available at www.hafoundation.org. The deadline to apply for the program is 5 p.m. on Nov. 1. Contact Cassandra Wagner at 442-2993 or
The program is made possible by the vision and generosity of community members. The timelessness of their gifts is reinforced through the many projects supported by their donations.
Vera Vietor brought Humboldt Area Foundation to life in 1972. Her charitable spirit and commitment to the community has been echoed by thousands of residents whose gifts are working to educate, inspire, provide food and shelter, care for animals, protect the environment and provide leadership and problem solving to the region.
