On November 24, the Trump Administration announced the 11th National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Draft Proposed Program, which includes lease sales off of the California coast, including Humboldt County.Comments are due January 23 by 8:59 pm PST and must be submitted through the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management website or via U.S. mail. You can submit comments on the BOEM web portal by clicking on the blue COMMENTS button. Remember to tell your personal story of what connects you to the coast and why you support ocean protection over profits for fossil fuel companies. Does your livelihood rely on clean water and healthy fisheries? Does your family vacation along the coast? Do you find peace of mind strolling along the shore, birdwatching and keeping an eye out for whales? Your comments are espeically critical since the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has not scheduled any public hearings in or near the coastlines that would be affected by the inevitable oil spills that have devastated marine and coastal ecocystems, commercial fisheries, and coastal tourism and recreation over and over again. The threats from offshore oil and gas development are not worth the risk. We hope you will join us in making your voice heard. Californians have overwhelmingly opposed new offshore oil and gas development for 40 years. We must once again speak up to protect our coastline, coastal economy, and a clean energy future. In addition to direct harm from oil spills, the proposed 5-year plan fails to consider the long-term effects of new offshore oil and gas drilling from climate change, including extreme rainfall and flash flooding, sea level rise and coastal erosion, wildfires, marine heat waves and ocean acidification. For info on the legal framework that governs BOEM's 5-year plans for offshore oil and gas leasing, check out this Congressional Reaearch Service report. Please submit your comments today![Docket No. BOEM-2025-0483-0001]
