On July 23 at 5:30pm, the Humboldt Bay Harbor District will unveil its visual simulations of the heavy lift terminal it is proposing to assemble offshore wind turbines that would be installed 20-30 miles offshore in the Humboldt Wind Lease Area. Although the size of these turbines has yet to be determined, they are likely to be around 900 feet tall - about three times taller than the former pulp mill smokestack in Samoa. The proposed site, known as Redwood Marine Terminal 1, is just south of the Samoa Bridge and 0.4 mi from the west side of Tuluwat Island, the center of the universe for Wiyot people. The City of Eureka returned the sacred site to the Wiyot Tribe in 2019. It is also home to hundreds of nesting egrets and herons. Many of you have asked about the visual impacts of the project - this is a good opportunity to get an idea of what it would look like from various vantage points around Humboldt Bay, including there Eureka Waterfront.
