HUMBOLDT BAY – The Rick Bailey Mortgage billboard on U.S. Highway 101 south of Arcata has fallen on its face, and may not go back up.

According to Humboldt Baykeeper Policy Director Jen Kalt, a county building inspector is on scene right now red-tagging the billboard to prevent any reconstruction.

Update: Kalt reports that a county building official has issued a stop-work order requiring CBS Outdoor to obtain a building permit before any reconstruction is allowed. That’s something it has never done, as the billboards were built before they were required. The Humboldt Bay-facing location was later defined as a “scenic view” area in the county’s Local Coastal Plan.

Apparently the worker in the photo is from North Coast Signs, which left once the stop-work order was issued.
Kalt said the billboard was obviously cut down, and did not blow down.
