101 Corridor

Humboldt Waterkeeper has been following Caltrans' Eureka-Arcata 101 Corridor Safety Improvement Project since 2007, when the Draft Environmental Impact Report was released. Caltrans proposes to improve safety along this 8-mile stretch of highway adjacent to the Humboldt Bay shoreline between Arcata and Eureka.

Caltrans officials have pulled the U.S. Highway 101 safety corridor project from today’s California Coastal Commission meeting to allow more time to review a staff report that recom­mends against certification due to inconsistencies with the Coastal Act.

Coastal Commission Staff Recommends No Interchange at Indianola

The Coastal Commission staff report released on Friday, June 28, recommends against the proposed interchange at Indianola Cutoff. It is inconsistent with the Coastal Act’s wetland fill policy, since the proposed interchange would increase traffic capacity.

More than 500 people have signed an online petition ask­ing Caltrans to reschedule a meeting on proposed U.S. Highway 101 safety corridor improvements so that the hearing can be held in Eureka.

The $23 million improve­ment project, which includes adding signals and an inter­change on the stretch of U.S. Highway 101 between Eureka and Arcata, is slated to go before the California Coastal Commission at its May meet­ing in San Rafael.

“Our immediate concern is that the meeting is going to be held 250 miles away,” Humboldt Baykeeper said.
