Congratulations and our deepest thanks to the Baykeepers of the Year, Michael Welch and Mike Manetas, who have been watchdogging the PG&E nuclear power plant at King Salmon for decades.

The oldest commercial nuclear power plant in the U.S. shut down for good in 1976 in large part due to the efforts of Michael Welch and his colleagues at Redwood Alliance. Today, the decommissioning of the nuclear reactor is underway and the high-level radioactive waste stored on-site according to the safest methods currently known - thanks in large part to Mike and Michael, who have diligently done their homework and demanded methods that will best protect Humboldt Bay and nearby communities. We are grateful and pleased to recognize them as the 2013 Baykeepers of the Year!
